Over the preceding years, Annika Ström, Nikolaj Recke, and Thorbjørn Bechmann worked with psycho- and sociographic investigations of their own relationships to their close surroundings. Their artistic practices circled around concepts such as identity and presence. Across their works, there were numerous connections in both content and formal approaches, making it striking that they had not previously been presented together.

Annika Ström was a Swedish artist educated at The Royal Danish Academy of Art. At the time, she lived and worked in Berlin and Copenhagen.

In the years leading up to the exhibition, Ström worked with video and, at Stalke Galleri, presented photographic works positioned at the boundary between documentary and staged imagery. Set in environments situated between the natural and the arranged, the photographs captured people absorbed in bodily, gymnastic exercises that at times appeared almost directly obscure. All photographs were sized 130 × 90 cm.

Nikolaj Recke presented, among other works, the installation In the Moment of Realisation. The installation consisted of a video projection of a working situation. The work was self-referential in its construction and in its illusory narrative in formal terms, driven by a longing and fascination with material and content that were neither rehearsed nor acted out. The work’s force lay in the interplay between production and presentation, which resulted in a strong physical and visual manifestation. The installation began in the moment between the spectators’ acceptance of the presentation and the realization of what was actually taking place, operating between concrete reality and visual fiction.

Over the preceding years, Thorbjørn Bechmann worked with the social space and the individual’s relationship to it. At this exhibition, he presented paintings that departed from a less subjective position, investigating interpersonal relations. The paintings functioned as points of departure that acknowledged a connection between aesthetics and the social.

In connection with the exhibition, a catalogue was produced with texts by Jokum Rohde, Steffan Boje af Gennäs, Cecilie Høgsbro, Josephine Berry, and Micz Flor.
