Stalke Galleri Introduction

Stalke Galleri – Vision, Experimentation and History From Galleri Jedig to Stalke Galleri

The story of Stalke Galleri begins in 1982 with the founding of Galleri Jedig, which quickly established itself as a radical, artist-driven platform on the Danish art scene. In the mid-1980s, Galleri Nørregade also emerged as a temporary exhibition space, continuing the gallery's focus on experimental formats and challenging conventional art contexts.

Based on this foundation, Stalke Galleri was established in 1987 by Sam Jedig and Joachim Rothenborg. Together, they created a gallery dedicated to conceptual and experimental art practices. Shortly after the founding, Rothenborg chose to leave the project, and Sam Jedig has since continued as the gallery’s artistic director and curator.

A History of Innovation

Since 1987, Stalke Galleri has built a strong reputation in modern and contemporary art. Now located in Kirke Sonnerup, a tranquil village surrounded by scenic landscapes in central Zealand, the gallery acts as a sanctuary for artists and art enthusiasts alike. From the outset, Stalke has been recognized for fostering innovation and experimentation, with a particular focus on neo-conceptual and minimalist art.

One of the gallery’s most pioneering initiatives is the "Stalke Out Of Space"project. This concept redefines where and how art can be exhibited. By utilizing alternative spaces such as museums, corporate environments and unconventional architectural contexts, the gallery expands the framework for artistic display. The project's flexibility and reach are continuously explored through new formats, including Artstamp.dkand the Stalke Cube.

Stalke Collection: A Treasure of Art History

In addition to its exhibition program, the gallery maintains the Stalke Collection, a unique selection of modern and contemporary artworks, many by artists who have previously exhibited at Stalke. Spanning from the 1960s to today, the collection reflects decades of evolving artistic practices. Its rotating themes offer visitors a fresh and cohesive perspective on the history of contemporary art.

Notable Artists Exhibited

Throughout its history, Stalke Galleri has collaborated with some of the most recognized figures in both Danish and international contemporary art. Among the prominent Danish artists are Albert Mertz and Olafur Eliasson, both of whom have significantly shaped the gallery’s identity. On the international front, Stalke has exhibited pioneering American artists such as William Anastasi, Dove Bradshaw, and William Anthony, further cementing the gallery’s position.
