CITY ART

He just can’t stay away! It was not more than three-quarters of a year ago that gallery owner Sam Jedig declared in an interview in this newspaper that he was done running a gallery. Now he wanted to deal a little in art, organize art projects in all sorts of places other than in his fashionable gallery, called Stalke, and otherwise spend his time surfing.

And this month, he has opened a business that he calls an art trade, but which could easily be mistaken for a gallery. The reasoning should perhaps be found in good offers for suitable premises and a belief that some art will also sell in the slipstream of an economic upswing.

Judging by the opening exhibition, Sam Jedig will not least focus on the generation known as “the boys from Baghuset”; a defunct exhibition space in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro that served as a starting point for talented artists like Lars Bent Petersen, Peter Holst Henckel, Peter Rössell, Peter Neusch, and Christian Schmidt Rasmussen, as well as their rise to prominence in Danish art. Young artists who position themselves in the lineage of Fluxus, pop art, and conceptual art with such an ironic twist that it justifies speaking of a renewal.

But Sam Jedig has not forgotten the circle from his previous gallery. These are people like Margrete Sørensen, Mogens Møller, Marianne Hesselbjerg, Lawrence Weiner, and William Anastasi. So, under all circumstances, Jedig will be welcomed back into the fold. It could use a bit of new thinking.
