In his article, Poul Erik Tøjner describes Torben Ebbesen as an artist whose practice consistently operates in the tension between the enigmatic and the precisely reflected. Ebbesen’s works do not reveal themselves immediately; instead, they require time, attention, and a willingness to accept that meaning is neither fixed nor conclusive.

Tøjner points out that Ebbesen’s practice moves freely between installation, works on paper, and sculpture, and that materials, hanging strategies, and spatial shifts play a decisive role in how the works are experienced. The practice is connected both to art-historical traditions and to a broader existential investigation of perception, sensation, and meaning.

The article further emphasizes that Ebbesen’s art does not aim at explanation or clear interpretation, but instead holds the viewer in a state of attentiveness and uncertainty, where experience itself takes precedence over conclusion.

As Tøjner notes, Ebbesen’s works “do not give themselves away,” but instead keep the viewer engaged in an open and exploratory encounter with materials and space.
