William Anthony
At Art Cologne in April, Stalke, in collaboration with Thomas Rehbein Galerie, had the great pleasure of presentingWilliam Anthony at Collaboration. The presentation receivedconsiderable attention from the German art scene, and it was therefore followed upby two exhibitions: first at Stalke Galleri and the following week in connection with DC-OPEN in Cologne at Thomas Rehbein Galerie, with an opening on September 4.
William Anthony (New York) mercilessly caricaturedeverything from war to the art world, as well as the joys and madness of love. Anthony explainedthat his style originatedfrom the drawing mistakes made by his least talented students.
The New York Timeswrotethat Anthony was“hilarious” and “profound,” meaning both insanely funny and deep at the same time, and that he had achievedcult status in the art world.
“I remainedtotally charmed by their (Anthony’s drawings) irrelevance, their sly idiot cunning, their incisive social commentary in the delicious disguise of incompetence.”
— Leo Steinberg, letter, 1990
In connection with William Anthony’s exhibition in 2013, IRONIC ICONS at Stalke Galleri, a book featuring William Anthony’s complete works from the 1960s to the present was published. The book, titled IRONIC ICONS, was editedby Sam Jedig with a foreword by Jacob Lillemose, who had followedthe artist for many years.
