Nikolaj Recke (Frontspace)

It was with great pleasure that Stalke Galleri presented Nikolaj Recke’s exhibition Photos 09–11.

The exhibition offered insight into Recke’s photographic works from the previous two years. Recke’s photographs often functioned as extensions of ideas first explored in videos and installations. The motifs in his photographs included recognizable spaces such as landscapes and nocturnal environments, yet were imbued with a distinct aesthetic marked by self-awareness, insight, political consciousness, and a romantic sense of beauty.

Recke’s photographic practice aligned with the revival of conceptual art in the 1990s. Unlike historical conceptual art, Recke’s work was not solely concerned with defining what art is, but rather with exploring how art can be used to pose essential questions about the world, with all its uncertainties and multiple perspectives. The exhibition presented a selection of earlier works as a backdrop for a series of new pieces. By juxtaposing retrospective elements with newly produced works, new projects and connections emerged.

In the Backspace, works were shown by Søren Dahlgaard, Kristleifur Björnsson, Albert Mertz, Olafur Eliasson, Dove Bradshaw, William Anastasi, Thorbjørn Lausten, Flemming Brusegaard, Jes Brinch, Thomas Bang, Anne Bennike, and William Anthony.
