It is with great pleasure that Stalke Gallery opens Nikolaj Recke's exhibition Photos 09-11

The exhibition provides insight into Recke's photographic works over the past two years. Often, Recke's photographic works are extensions of ideas first tested in videos and installations. The motifs in Recke's photos are recognizable spaces, such as landscapes and nighttime environments, but with a twist and an aesthetic involving self-awareness, insight, political consciousness, and a romantic sense of beauty.

Recke's photographic works align with the 1990s' revival of conceptual art. Unlike historical conceptual art, for Recke, it is not just a question of what art is, but an exploration of how art can be used to ask essential questions about the world with all its uncertainties and perspectives.

The exhibition showcases a selection of earlier works as a backdrop for a series of new pieces. By presenting both a retrospective view of Recke's works and creating coherence, new projects emerge.
