New Stalke Kunsthandel

Vesterbrogade 15A/backyard and front 15B

1991

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Stalke Galleri underwent a significant change in direction. The large, permanent gallery space on Vesterbrogade 15A was closed and replaced by Stalke Kunsthandel in new, smaller premises at the same address. At the same time, the gallery’s main focus shifted away from the traditional exhibition model toward Stalke Out Of Space, a project-based format with exhibitions and activities situated outside the gallery’s fixed location.

With Stalke Out Of Space, the gallery developed a more flexible and mobile practice, characterized by collaborations with other art institutions, fairs, and alternative exhibition contexts. This shift marked a break with the notion of the gallery as a clearly defined exhibition space and pointed toward a more open understanding of how art could be produced, presented, and circulated.

The transition to Stalke Kunsthandel and Stalke Out Of Space constitutes a central chapter in Stalke’s history and laid the foundation for later initiatives in which context, mobility, and site-specific engagement became central to the gallery’s practice
