WILLIAM ANASTASI
1933 - 2023 (USA)
William Anastasi is considered one of the most influential figures in American Conceptual art and Minimalism. In the early 1960s, he emerged on the New York art scene and was soon represented by Virginia Dwan Gallery, exhibiting alongside key artists such as Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, and Carl Andre. Rather than seeking recognition through traditional aesthetics, Anastasi developed a radically independent practice rooted in rules, repetition, chance, and the dematerialization of the artwork.
His work revolves around perception, language, and action—often incorporating the body and the passage of time as active elements in the creation process. Anastasi cultivated an interdisciplinary and conceptual approach that integrates text, sound, installation, and written elements, with strong connections to literature and music.
Stalke Gallery began collaborating with Anastasi in 1988, leading to numerous exhibitions over more than three decades—both in the gallery and at institutions such as Esbjerg Art Museum and Nikolaj Kunsthal. His influence on Danish artists and his importance in understanding Conceptual and performative art make him a significant reference point in the development of contemporary art.
