NIKOLAJ RECKE
(DK)
Nikolaj Recke (b. 1969, Denmark) is a Danish artist whose practice revolves around themes of identity, authenticity, romantic ideals, and the role of the artist—often approached through a reflective and staged lens. Working across media such as photography, video, installation, and text, he has been an active voice in a conceptual tradition since the late 1990s, where personal traces and art historical references are interwoven.
In Recke’s works, the artist himself often appears—deliberately exaggerated and self-aware—questioning the idea of the authentic artistic subject. He plays with the stereotype of the sensitive and inspired creator, turning the notion of artistic genius into a critical and investigative tool.
His practice can be described as a form of emotional conceptualism, where conceptual strategies are combined with introspection, performance, and existential inquiry. The result is a body of work that balances presence and distance, the personal and the analytical.
Since 1996, Nikolaj Recke has been affiliated with Stalke Galleri, where he has held several solo exhibitions. He has also exhibited widely both in Denmark and internationally, including at 18th Street Arts Center in Los Angeles and Kunsthal Aarhus.
