Peter Røssell (b. 1964, Copenhagen) emerged as one of the central figures in the artist collective Baghuset, founded in 1987. Baghuset became a key platform for a generation of Danish artists working with non-speculative and conceptually driven painting during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Røssell’s collaboration with Stalke Out Of Spacebegan in the early 1990s, when the gallery presented the entire Baghuset group at Stockholm Art Fair. In 1996, Stalke Galleri hosted Røssell’s first solo exhibition, Indecent Exposure, followed by his participation at Art Cologne 1996, a joint project between Stalke Out Of Space and Galleri Specta. These exhibitions marked a defining moment in Røssell’s international visibility.
Røssell’s works are characterized by their use of pop-cultural symbols, irony, and commercial imagery. Drawing from Pop Art, cartoons, and advertising, he constructs dense visual compositions that reflect on the absurdities and excesses of media-driven culture. His paintings balance humor and critique, transforming familiar icons into commentaries on everyday life and contemporary society.
Through the 1990s, Røssell’s exhibitions at Stalke Galleri contributed significantly to his recognition as a key Danish painter of his generation, bridging the gap between postmodern irony and painterly expression
