Mogens Møller (1934–2021) was a central Danish artist and one of the leading figures in the introduction of minimalism in Denmark, closely associated with Hein Heinsen and Stig Brøgger. His work combined conceptual clarity with a strong sense of material presence, often exploring scale, perception, and the dialogue between architecture and sculpture.
In 1988, Mogens Møller presented a major solo exhibition at Stalke Project in Copenhagen, parallel to a large exhibition in Malmö, to which Stalke contributed with a comprehensive catalogue featuring texts by Else Marie Bukdahl, Karsten Ohrt, and Lars Morill, with an introduction by Else Bülow. Later the same year, Stalke became the first Danish gallery to participate in Art Cologne, together with Susanne Ottosen and Galleri Edeling. Here Mogens Møller was presented alongside artists such as William Anastasi, Torben Ebbesen, Thomas Bang, and Thorbjørn Lausten, marking an important breakthrough for Danish participation at this prestigious fair.
In 1989, the collaboration naturally came to an end due to different visions for the gallery’s future, marking a transition rather than a break. At this time, Mezzaninen had been opened as a new exhibition space within the gallery, where, among others, BAGHUSET presented their work. The first exhibition took place on 23–25 March 1989 at Stalke Galleri/Mezzaninen, Vesterbrogade 15, Copenhagen, featuring Lars Bent Petersen, Erik Steffensen, Susan Hinum, Peter Holst Henckel, Ole Jensen, and Ivar Tønsberg.
At the same time, the gallery continued to present established artists such as Thomas Bang, Thorbjørn Lausten, Torben Ebbesen, and Margrete Sørensen, all of whom had their solo exhibitions in the following period. The combination of younger generations in Mezzaninen and established artists in the main program pointed towards the changes that culminated with the founding of Stalke Out of Space in 1991 and a new phase in Danish contemporary art.
In 1994, a new gallery project was carried forward with large premises, marking the beginning of another chapter in Stalke’s history.
