Henrik B. Andersen is a Danish sculptor, educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under, among others, Willy Ørskov and Hein Heinsen. Since the 1980s, he has established himself as one of Denmark’s most influential sculptors, with a practice that challenges the classical concept of sculpture through complex materials, paradoxical forms, and philosophical layers of meaning.
Exhibition at Stalke Galleri
In 1989, Stalke Galleri presented a major solo exhibition by Henrik B. Andersen, which received significant attention in the press and was accompanied by in-depth reviews in Politiken and Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten.
The exhibition featured monumental sculptures that appeared at once strictly formed and enigmatically mysterious. Works such as the large spherical sculpture and the abstracted animal-like figure created an atmosphere of intense contemplation, where the tactility of materials (plaster, polyurethane, metal) was set against ideas of distance, perception, and meaning.
Critics described the works as “mysteries in plaster”, where their quiet, seemingly closed forms in fact invited reflection and deeper engagement. Andersen was highlighted as an artist capable of connecting contemporary philosophical and art-theoretical currents with a renewal of sculpture as both physical and mental experience.
Position Today
Since then, Henrik B. Andersen has established a strong presence in Danish and international art. He has held major exhibitions at institutions such as the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), Esbjerg Art Museum, ARoS, and the Funen Art Museum, and his works are represented in several public collections.
From 1999 to 2008 he was professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Sculpture School in Copenhagen, and since 2008 he has been professor at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts in Lithuania. He has received numerous awards, including the Eckersberg Medal, and his practice today continues to explore chaos theory, perception, and the dissolution of the classical sculptural language into new layers of meaning.
Henrik B. Andersen holds a central position as one of the most significant Danish sculptors since the 1980s, with works that continue to challenge the balance between the recognizable and the inexplicable, between rationality and mystery.
