Hans Petersson

Hans Peterson (b. 1960) has been a central figure within the generation of Danish painters emerging in the mid-1990s, developing a distinctive visual language that merges figurative fragments with bold, expressive abstraction. His collaboration with Stalke Galleri began in the 1990s, where he participated in several group shows before presenting his major solo exhibition at the gallery in 2004.

Peterson’s work explores identity, perception, and narrative construction through painting. Drawing on sources from comic books, mythology, and pop culture, he transforms familiar figures and motifs into psychologically charged compositions that challenge the reliability of visual representation. His layered canvases shift between recognition and dissolution, evoking both the seduction and instability of the image.

Throughout his exhibitions at Stalke Galleri, Peterson established himself as one of the key voices in Danish contemporary painting. The gallery played an important role in his artistic development and visibility, contributing significantly to his position within the art scene. His work has since inspired a younger generation of painters who continue to explore the expressive and conceptual potential of figurative abstraction.
