Marianne Hesselbjerg

Marianne Hesselbjerg (b. 1949) made her debut at Stalke Galleri in 1989 as part of the exhibition Gæster and has since been regularly featured in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the 1990s and beyond.

A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Hesselbjerg has developed a refined sculptural and installation practice over more than three decades. Working in materials such as steel, glass, wood, and aluminium, she creates spatial works defined by a cool, minimalist vocabulary. Her practice consistently explores themes such as boundaries, transitions, duplication, and thresholds.

Her works are known for their ability to both inhabit and merge with the architectural spaces they are made for, challenging the viewer’s movement and perception. The tactile presence of the materials and their formal tensions are central to how the works articulate and reframe the space around them.

One of her early key works, Nålehækken (1985), consists of 2,200 steel needles, each 80 cm long, mounted in a grid. It rises as a physical and psychological barrier, encapsulating the artist’s enduring interest in the aesthetics and significance of spatial boundaries.

In 2020, Marianne Hesselbjerg received the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Honorary Award in recognition of her ability to expose fundamental sculptural principles while connecting them to universal human references and layers of meaning.
