Margrete Sørensen – Sculpture, Installation, and Spatial Poetry | Stalke Galleri
Margrete Sørensen has been a central figure in Stalke Galleri’s program since the late 1980s, with several major solo exhibitions since her debut at the gallery in 1988. Her artistic practice is rooted in historical constructivism and postwar concrete art, working with a wide range of materials – from plastic, graphite, iron, and wood to glass, mirrors, wire, and colored strings.
Sørensen’s works explore the boundaries between sculpture, installation, architecture, and visual art. She investigates how construction, materials, and light can influence the experience of space, and her installations often create both physical, poetic, and spiritual encounters for the viewer.
An early example is her 1981 installation at Charlottenborg, where she presented three spiral constructions made from different materials, each changing character depending on lighting, placement, and texture. In later years, she has created numerous permanent public commissions, including the 2019 altarpiece at Enghave Church in Copenhagen – an extensive gesamtkunstwerkof screens, mirrors, and glass prints, where Christian symbols are mixed with other imagery in a sensory dialogue with the space
Margrete Sørensen’s work is characterized by a strong material awareness, a playful use of color and light, and the ability to create artworks that invite both physical and mental involvement from the viewer. As a member of the artist group Ny abstraktion(New Abstraction), she has contributed to advancing non-referential, abstract art that speaks directly to the senses.
She has exhibited widely in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and the USA, including a solo show at the legendary Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1983, but has above all been one of the foremost artists in Stalke Galleri’s exhibition program for more than three decades.
