Lawrence Weiner at Stalke Galleri
Lawrence Weiner played a decisive role in the formative years of Stalke Galleri and was one of the first internationally recognized conceptual artists the gallery worked closely with. His initial appearance was in a joint exhibition with Albert Mertz, where the meeting of two strong artistic positions generated a new energy within the emerging gallery. Shortly after, he participated in the groundbreaking group exhibition Conceptart in 1989, which clearly marked Stalke’s commitment to conceptual art. In 1990, the gallery presented a solo exhibition with Weiner at Kunstforum in Hamburg—an important step in Stalke’s international profile. Later, he also took part in an exhibition with Lone Mertz at Galleri Kambur in Iceland.
Weiner was not just part of the program—he became a guiding figure. His uncompromising approach to art, where language served as the material and the idea as the core of the work, inspired an entire generation of younger artists whom Stalke would go on to introduce and collaborate with. His influence was both artistic and conceptually foundational to the gallery’s direction. Through the collaboration with Weiner, Stalke Galleri established itself as a platform for conceptual art, and his presence significantly helped shape the artistic identity the gallery would become known for—both in Denmark and internationally.
