hulda vilhjamsdottir

Hulda Vilhjálmsdóttir (b. 1971 in Reykjavík) is a prominent figure among the new generation of Icelandic artists. She graduated from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2000 and has since explored the boundaries and potential of painting through a highly personal and experimental approach. Hulda describes her practice as a kind of “research in painting,” constantly seeking new forms and opening up intuitive and narrative layers within the image.

Hulda has exhibited several times with Stalke Galleri since the 2008. Her work is known for its vivid, expressive visual language, where human figures, natural motifs, and symbolic scenes coexist in vibrant colors and energetic lines. Deeply rooted in Icelandic nature and culture, her paintings often address emotions, identity, and existential themes.

In addition to her visual art, Hulda has published poetry collections and played an active role in the Icelandic art scene as the initiator of several alternative exhibition spaces. Her practice ranges from the intuitive and poetic to the performative and socially engaged.

Today, Hulda Vilhjálmsdóttir is recognized as one of Iceland’s most significant contemporary artists, with numerous exhibitions to her name – including at the Reykjavík Art Museum, Kling & Bang, and Listval – and with works held in both private and public collections.
