einar thorsteinn

Einar Thorsteinn was a visionary Icelandic architect, mathematician, and artist whose practice unfolded at the intersection of geometry, spatial structure, and speculative thought. Educated at the Technical University of Hannover, he began his career with Frei Otto, helping to develop the lightweight structures for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. He later collaborated with NASA and architect Guillermo Trotti on concepts for lunar research laboratories and other space-architecture projects.

From 1996 to 2014 Thorsteinn worked closely with Olafur Eliasson, producing a wide range of models, structures, and studies—most notably the ever-expanding project Model Room, shown at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2014. Comprising intricate geometric forms, maquettes, and architectural experiments in multiple scales and materials, Model Roomfunctioned as a living archive of their joint investigations.

Thorsteinn held his first solo exhibition at Stalke Gallery in 2002and subsequently appeared in several group shows. His pieces—spatial constructions, drawings, and systematic studies—probe the links between form, nature, and the cosmos. The collaboration with Stalke provided a crucial platform for presenting his idea-driven, experimental approach within an artistic context.

As Thorsteinn remarked shortly before his death, “On my deathbed, I want to say that my life has been one big experiment.”His body of work bears out that claim—a sustained exploration of the expanded possibilities of architecture and art.
